ICBC Claims
As of April 1, 2019, ICBC introduced a significant policy change that provides coverage for 12 pre‑authorized acupuncture treatments within the first 12 weeks following a motor‑vehicle accident. This development is highly beneficial for clients, as acupuncture is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating pain, soft‑tissue injuries, and stress related to trauma. The policy is especially helpful for individuals who experience mild to moderate injuries and require timely, non‑invasive care to support their recovery.
Once an ICBC claim is filed online, clients may begin their first 12 acupuncture treatments without a referral from a family physician and without prior approval from an ICBC adjuster. To initiate treatment, the acupuncturist only requires the client’s claim number, accident date, and BC Services Card number. Early intervention is strongly encouraged, as prompt treatment often leads to better recovery outcomes, regardless of fault in the accident.
This policy represents a meaningful advancement in British Columbia’s healthcare and rehabilitation system. Sharing this information with friends, family, and community members may help others access timely care that can significantly improve their post‑accident recovery.
